Event: CyberSmart Seniors: Spot the Scam, Stay Secure
Date and time: 25 October 2025
Venue: Centre of HOPE worldwide Singapore, 1 Edgefield Walk, Singapore 828850

Technology is a convenience available to all, but everyone also deserves to learn how to protect themselves in the ever-present dangers brought about by malicious entities. On 25 October, USER Experience Researchers partnered with HOPE worldwide Singapore to conduct “CyberSmart Seniors: Spot the Scam, Stay Secure,” an interactive workshop that turned cybersecurity awareness into practical, friendly learning, because we at USER believe digital empowerment knows no age.

Why digital inclusion matters

For the elderly, the internet arrived mid-life rather than mid-school years. That creates a different starting point and a different set of questions. Which messages are safe to open? What to do with an unfamiliar link? How to handle a caller who asks for sensitive information? These are not minor worries. They shape trust in services, confidence with devices, and the freedom to stay active in a digital society.

Our ESG commitment at USER places digital inclusion at the heart of our Social pillar. This programme bridges the gap by meeting seniors where they are and building skills that make every day online safer and more enjoyable.

Teaching cybersecurity for seniors

Over two hours, our facilitators guided participants through a friendly, hands-on curriculum:

Spotting common scams
Participants learned how to recognise warning signs in calls, texts, emails, and social posts. USER simulated impersonation tactics to check out, urgent language that pressures quick action, suspicious links , prize and investment promises, and dangerous requests.

Safe habits for everyday use
The facilitators also explained how to secure phone and messaging settings, set up stronger passwords, do multi factor sign-in, privacy controls, and how to update apps. The participants were made to practice simple checks before tapping a link or returning a call.

Real examples and open Q and A

Topics were anchored in examples seniors meet in daily life, followed by questions and personal scenarios. The open format encouraged conversation, peer learning, and small wins that build confidence.

Participants gained valuable insights into identifying common scam patterns and recognising words and tactics that often signalled risk. They were equipped with practical steps to safeguard their personal data and finances while navigating apps and websites. The workshop also emphasised the importance of pausing before acting, verifying information, and relying on official channels to confirm legitimacy. Additionally, seniors learned how to seek help confidently and without embarrassment whenever something seemed suspicious or unfamiliar.

Beyond the numbers, the most important result was confidence. Participants left with clear, repeatable steps they can share with friends and family.

How we delivered

Volunteers from USER Singapore supported facilitation and device set-up, including giving out handouts and conducting practice exercises on actual devices to make technical ideas feel familiar.

Our approach comes from the same principles we use in user experience work. We start with people, design for clarity, test ideas in real life, and then iterate. Seniors learn best when topics are relevant, steps are small, and success is visible, and that was how USER and HOPE worldwide Singapore ran the workshop.

Voices from the room

Participants shared that they felt more confident, more aware of warning signs, and more willing to ask questions in future. Caregivers told us they appreciated the step-by-step tips they could reinforce at home. Feedback from facilitators highlighted the power of small group coaching and the value of simple language.

Our ESG commitment

Social pillar: Digital inclusion and community empowerment.

CyberSmart Seniors supports USER Singapore’s ESG programme by narrowing the digital divide and promoting a safer, more connected community. When seniors know how to protect themselves, they can enjoy telehealth, digital payments, messaging with family, and online services with less worry. Empowering lives through knowledge creates sustainable impact in action.

What comes next

USER plans to expand “CyberSmart Seniors” through additional sessions and targeted modules on topics like privacy in messaging apps, safe online shopping, and recognising investment schemes. We also aim to train more volunteers so that support is available in more neighbourhoods.

If your community group would like to co-host a session, we would love to hear from you.
